En celebración del Mes de la Historia Negra
Muchas personas conocen sobre Compton, una ciudad ubicada en el sur del condado de Los Ángeles, gracias a la música, películas y medios de comunicación. Keith Nathaniel lo conoce por experiencia directa. Antes de que Nathaniel y su familia se mudaran a Compton en la década de los 1970, los disturbios de 1965 en el área de Watts intensificaron la tensión que se estaba gestando entre las fuerzas del orden y la comunidad negra, la cual se sentía no solo en California sino en toda la nación.
"Antes de mudarnos, Compton iba cambiando de ser una ciudad predominantemente blanca a una ciudad negra. Los disturbios de Watts cambiaron eso y de pronto, hubo blancos que salieron huyendo de Compton hacia los suburbios", mencionó Nathaniel, director de Extensión Cooperativa de UC en el condado de Los Ángeles.
Al ir creciendo, Nathaniel estaba rodeado de personas que lucían como él. "Era una comunidad típica que se apoyaba entre sí. Los adultos se conocían entre sí y los chicos se conocían entre sí”, agregó.
Nathaniel recuerda a sus maestros en la primaria y secundaria, identificándolos como la primera generación de estudiantes universitarios – la mayoría de los cuales se graduaron de la universidad tras el caso de derechos civiles Brown vs. Board of Education de 1954, el cual terminó la segregación racial en las escuelas públicas de todo Estados Unidos.
"Esos maestros tenían el deseo real de que igualáramos y hasta excediéramos su nivel educativo", expresó Nathaniel. "Estaban comprometidos a vernos convertidos en adultos saludables y prósperos".
No obstante que Nathaniel y sus compañeros tuvieron líderes negros que influyeron en ellos en sus escuelas, darle prioridad a su éxito académico fue un reto ante la introducción del crac de cocaína "Con las drogas llegó la afluencia de pandillas. Luego vimos a la comunidad desestabilizarse debido a las pandillas que querían controlar su cuadra y esa esquina", dijo Nathaniel.
"Solíamos tener balaceras en nuestra escuela. Pero las afectadas eran las vidas negras y cafés por lo que no era del interés periodístico en ese sentido. No como hoy en día en la que vemos las noticias una epidemia de tiroteos en las escuelas. Eso pasaba en otros tiempos, también", indicó, enfatizando que a él y sus compañeros se le recordaba constantemente que tuvieran cuidado cuando asistían a eventos sociales en la comunidad.
"Daba miedo pensar que te pudieran confundir con un miembro de la pandilla aun cuando no tuvieras nada que ver".
Estudiantes que una vez fueron amigos en primaria o secundaria se volvieron enemigos al iniciar la preparatoria. A pesar de que los chicos negros eran altamente preferidos como reclutas para pandillas, Nathaniel señaló que sus fuertes bases familiares y su enfoque en los estudios lo mantuvieron alejado del fuego cruzado en el que otros se metieron.
Después de graduarse de la preparatoria, Nathaniel ingresó a UC Davis, donde se cambió a sociología después de darse cuenta de que la ingeniería no era para él. "Tenía la intención de graduarme de ingeniería, pero era algo muy competitivo. Estaba en clases con estudiantes de pre-medicina y estaban subiendo la curva de calificaciones", bromeó.
Sin embargo, de lo que Nathaniel no se dio cuenta antes de la universidad, es que la aptitud académica no sería el aspecto más importante en su experiencia con la educación. Fueron también las conexiones y relaciones que construyó con otros. Al reflexionar sobre los cinco años que pasó en UC Davis, Nathaniel dijo que fueron los mejores cinco años de su juventud.
Agradecido con los maestros y consejeros que los mantuvieron a raya, Nathaniel determinó que deseaba convertirse en maestro. Después de Davis, cursó su maestría en la Universidad de Florida A&M donde estudió liderazgo educacional. A pesar de que su consejera de preparatoria instaba a los estudiantes negros a no ingresar a una universidad o colegio históricamente de negros, Nathaniel sintió la urgencia de hacer precisamente eso.
"Mi consejera era simplemente increíble. Su objetivo era que todos fueran a la universidad", mencionó Nathaniel. "Pero no le gustaba la idea de que fuéramos a HBCU porque no es como se ve el mundo real. Nos decía que lo mejor para nosotros era integrarnos en campus que reflejaran el mundo en el que vivimos".
La madre de Nathaniel murió mientras el asistía a escuela de postgrado, por lo cual regresó a California. A pesar de que su pérdida le llevó a creer que regresar a la escuela no era ideal en ese momento, Nathaniel manifestó que sus profesores lo buscaron mientras estaba lejos y su preocupación lo hizo cambiar de parecer.
"Preguntaban cómo estaba y eso me hizo darme cuenta del apoyo que tenía en Florida. Estoy seguro de que eso no hubiera pasado si no estuviera asistiendo a una HBCU", dijo Nathaniel, quien regresó a Florida a terminar lo que había empezado.
Mientras sacaba su maestría, Nathaniel recuerda que lo alentaron a estudiar un doctorado y lo consideró seriamente pero no inmediatamente. Para entonces, su visión giraba en convertirse en director o superintendente y expandir sus influencias más allá del aula. "Quería un lugar en la mesa, pero sabía que primero necesitaba tener las credenciales", agregó.
Después de regresar a California, Nathaniel solicitó un puesto de maestro y se encontró con un aviso en Los Angeles Times en donde buscaban un coordinador para el programa 4-H. No le dieron la posición que solicitó, pero le ofrecieron un puesto como coordinador en el programa de voluntarios Americorp/VISTA y lo aceptó sin dudar.
Desde 1994, Nathaniel ha formado parte de Extensión Cooperativa de UC y se inició en la gestión de los voluntarios de Americorp/VISTA, quienes eran responsables de introducir el programa 4-H a las comunidades de Los Ángeles. El programa creció rápidamente, contando con la participación de cuatro a cinco mil chicos diariamente. El poder del programa no solo radicaba en la pasión mostrada por los voluntarios, sino en el hecho de que estos vivían en las comunidades a las que servían.
Antes de su trabajo en 4-H, Nathaniel trabajó el Campfire Council y fue introducido a la educación informal como enseñar a los jóvenes sobre las destrezas de la vida y conectarse con ellos fuera del aula escolar. Esta experiencia le sirvió de mucho a Nathaniel conforme se integraba a 4-H, inspirándole a dar un giro en su meta original de enseñar en el sistema formal de kínder a grado 12.
En 1997, Nathaniel fue aceptado en UCLA en donde obtuvo un doctorado en educación mientras trabajaba a tiempo completo. "Regresar a ese lugar en la mesa… en este momento de mi carrera, sabía que quería influir en la política en beneficio de los jóvenes. Quería más que solo enseñar. Y también sabía que necesitaba de credenciales para hacerlo", dijo Nathaniel.
Hoy en día, Nathaniel inicia su trigésimo año de servicio a la comunidad a través de Extensión Cooperativa de UC. Al darse cuenta lo lejos que ha llegado, Nathaniel manifestó que la adversidad en su niñez le ayudó a formar su carácter y prepararlo para las futuras batallas.
Haciendo hincapié en la importancia de conectar con la gente, Nathaniel indicó que es satisfactorio servir a la comunidad que lo crió y le da crédito por sus triunfos a los mentores y compañeros que ha conocido en el camino.
"Si nos rodeamos de personas que tienen en sus mentes nuestros mejores intereses, creemos que vamos a llegar", dijo. "Se trata también de ser desinteresados. Que podamos ayudar a otros a que se vean asimismo de la manera en que los vemos; que se sientan empoderados a hacer cualquier cosa que quieran. Eso es lo que yo tuve y es lo que espero retribuir”.

In celebration of Black History Month
Through music, movies and other media, many people know about Compton, a city located in southern Los Angeles County. Keith Nathaniel knows it from firsthand experience. Before Nathaniel and his family moved to Compton in the 1970s, the LA Watts Riots of 1965 underscored the tension brewing between law enforcement and the Black community that was felt not just in California but nationwide.
“Before we moved, Compton was changing from a predominantly White city to a Black city. The Watts Riots changed that and suddenly, you've got White flight out of Compton and into the suburbs,” said Nathaniel, UC Cooperative Extension director in Los Angeles County.
Growing up, Nathaniel was surrounded by people who looked like him. “It was a typical community of people who supported each other. The adults knew each other, and the kids knew each other,” he said.
Nathaniel remembers his teachers in elementary and middle school, identifying them as first-generation college students – most of whom graduated from universities following the 1954 civil rights case, Brown vs. Board of Education, which resulted in the desegregation of public schools across the United States.
“Those teachers had this real desire for us to match, if not exceed, their success or level of educational attainment,” said Nathaniel. “They were committed to seeing us become healthy and thriving adults.”
Although Nathaniel and his peers had influential Black leaders in their schools, prioritizing academic success was challenged by the introduction of crack cocaine. “With drugs came influx of gangs. Then, you start to see the community become unstable because gangs want to control this block or that corner,” Nathaniel said.
“We used to have shootouts at our high school. But it was Black and Brown lives being affected so it wasn't newsworthy in that sense. Not like today where you see an epidemic of school shootings making the news. This was happening back in the day, too,” he said, emphasizing that he and his peers were constantly reminded to be cautious while out at social events in the community.
“It was scary to think that you could be mistaken for being in a gang even if you had no ties.”
Students that were once friends in elementary or middle school became enemies by the time they started high school. Although Black boys were highly favored as gang recruits, Nathaniel said that his strong family foundation and focus on academics kept him out of the crossfire that others stepped into.
After graduating from high school, Nathaniel started college at UC Davis, where he pivoted to sociology after realizing that engineering was not for him. “I intended to graduate with a degree in engineering, but it was so competitive. I was in classes with pre-med students, and they were jacking up the grading curve,” he joked.
What Nathaniel did not realize prior to college, however, is that academic aptitude would not be the most important aspect of his experience in education. It was also the connections and relationships he built with others. Reflecting on the five years he spent at UC Davis, Nathaniel said that it was the best five years of his young adulthood.
Grateful for the teachers and advisors that kept him grounded, Nathaniel decided he wanted to become a teacher himself. From Davis, he pressed on for his master's degree at Florida A&M University where he studied educational leadership. Despite his high school advisor discouraging Black students from attending a historically Black university or college, Nathaniel felt the urge to do just that.
“My advisor was just incredible. Her goal was to get everyone to college,” said Nathaniel. “But she didn't like the idea of us going to an HBCU because it's not how the real world looks. She would tell us that it's better for us to integrate ourselves on campuses that reflect the world we live in.”
During graduate school, Nathaniel's mother died, and he returned to California. Although his loss led him to believe that returning to school was not ideal at the time, Nathaniel said that his professors reached out to him while he was away, and their concern swayed him.
“They checked up on me and it made me realize how much support I had back in Florida. I'm pretty sure this wouldn't have been the case if I wasn't attending an HBCU,” Nathaniel said.
He went back to Florida to finish what he started. While earning a master's degree, Nathaniel said he was encouraged to pursue a doctorate degree and he seriously considered it, but not immediately. By then, his vision evolved into becoming a principal or superintendent and expanding his influence beyond the classroom. “I wanted a seat at the table, but I knew that I needed the credentials first,” he said.
Upon returning to California, Nathaniel applied for teaching positions and stumbled upon an ad in the Los Angeles Times seeking applications for a 4-H program coordinator. He was not offered the position he applied for, but he was offered a coordinator role for the Americorp/VISTA volunteer program instead and willingly accepted.
Since 1994, Nathaniel has been a part of UC Cooperative Extension and started out by managing the Americorp/VISTA volunteers who were responsible for introducing the 4-H program to communities across Los Angeles. The program grew quickly, engaging 4,000 to 5,000 kids daily. The power of the program was not just in its passionate volunteers, but the fact that the volunteers lived in the communities they served.
Prior to 4-H, Nathaniel worked for the Campfire Council and was introduced to informal education such as teaching youth in life skills and connecting with them outside of the traditional classroom. This experience served Nathaniel well as he transitioned into 4-H, inspiring him to pivot from his original goal of working in the formal K-12 system.
In 1997, Nathaniel was accepted to UCLA where he earned a doctorate of education while working full-time. “Going back to that seat at the table… by this time in my career, I knew that I wanted to influence policy that would benefit young people. I wanted to do more than teach. And I also knew that I needed the credentials to do it,” said Nathaniel.
Now, Nathaniel enters his 30th year of service to the community through UC Cooperative Extension. Realizing how far he has come, Nathaniel said that the adversity of his childhood helped build his character and prepared him for the battles ahead.
Emphasizing the significance of connecting with people, Nathaniel said that it is fulfilling to serve the community that raised him and credits the mentors and peers he has met along the way for his triumphs.
“If we surround ourselves with people that have our best interest in mind, we'd believe that we're going places,” he said. “It's about being selfless, too. So that we can help others see themselves the way we see them; so they feel empowered to do whatever it is they want to do. That's what I had, and that's what I hope to give back.”

The Black and Allied Employees hosted a webinar on June 14 to celebrate Juneteenth, the day when the last people held hostage under chattel slavery learned of their freedom — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Mary Blackburn, Ph.D., UC Cooperative Extension family and consumer sciences health and nutrition advisor in Alameda County, and Keith Nathaniel, Ed.D., 4-H youth development advisor and director of UCCE in Los Angeles County, described their educational and career journeys in agriculture and extension.
The hour-long discussion was moderated by Chandra Richards, UCCE agricultural land acquisitions academic coordinator serving San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties, and organized by the Black and Allied Employees employee resource group.
Blackburn and Nathaniel related how their experiences shape their work and how their lives connect to current patterns of inequity.
Blackburn, who grew up in the Deep South and began her career in the turbulent 1960s, recalled being fired twice when Bay Area hospital administrators realized she was Black. But she found allies and advocates along her career path. After joining UC ANR in Alameda County in 1990, Dr. B, as she is affectionately called by colleagues, built a diverse team of educators – Black, Latino and Asian – who she credits for the success UCCE has had in accessing people in jail, transitional homes and public housing to provide education.
Nathaniel, who joined UC ANR in 1994, described some of the institutional challenges he has had to overcome as a 4-H advisor to serve Black youth. In Los Angeles County, members of the public don't understand that urban children can benefit from 4-H programs, he said. Nathaniel also pointed out that racism persists in subtle as well as overt ways. On search committees, he advises colleagues to be specific rather than describing a candidate as “not a good fit.”

The University of California Cooperative Extension and its community partners have received nearly $500,000 from the California Department of Food and Agriculture to expand farm to school projects. The CDFA Office of Farm to Fork's 2021 California Farm to School Incubator Grant Program has awarded $8.496 million in grants to 60 farm-to-school projects throughout the state, including the following two UC Cooperative Extension projects.
Tuolumne Agricultural Connections Project
UC Cooperative Extension in the Central Sierra received $248,457 to work on the “Tuolumne Agricultural Connections Project” with Jamestown Elementary School District, Office of Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools, Mother Lode Regional Juvenile Detention Center, Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office and local farmers.
UC Cooperative Extension Central Sierra will work with the sheriff's office to expand an existing farm education center on land owned by the county detention center, to provide educational opportunities for public school students and juvenile detention center students.
“We're really excited to offer more learning opportunities for young people in Tuolumne County,” said JoLynn Miller, director of UC Cooperative Extension in the Central Sierra. “At the farm, we will be able to teach students about growing food with hands-on activities and field trips and provide incarcerated residents with job training.”
UCCE and the Sheriff's Office plan to start a sustainable egg-laying operation to supply public schools and other public institutions with locally produced eggs. At the juvenile detention center, UCCE will provide monthly gardening and cooking lessons to juveniles. UCCE also will support school gardens through the School Garden Network and expand Harvest of the Month education and tastings to more public schools and to the juvenile detention center. School food service directors will get help increasing procurement of California-grown foods for their menus to reinforce the Harvest of the Month education. Through Kids' Day at the Market events, they plan to introduce public school students to farmers markets as places to buy healthy foods.
Local sourcing of food across Los Angeles
In Los Angeles County, the Urban and Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College received a $250,000 grant. Occidental College is partnering with Los Angeles Unified School District, Los Angeles County Office of Education, Adventist Health Glendale Foundation, Big Green, Enrich LA, Garden School Foundation, Los Angeles Food Policy Council, National Health Foundation, Sage Garden Project, Seeds to Plate, Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles and UC Cooperative Extension in Los Angeles County.
The “Farm to Classroom: Sourcing Local for Farm to School Education Across Los Angeles” project will help farm-to-school educators purchase fresh produce from local farmers markets for in-class taste tests, garden lessons and recipe demonstrations. They will also offer teachers farm-to-classroom educational materials on food systems, farmers and agriculture, featured produce items and nutrition.
"We are thrilled and excited to be a partner on the project,” said Keith Nathaniel, UCCE director and 4-H youth development advisor in Los Angeles County. “Cooperative Extension in Los Angeles County is poised to provide quality educational materials that support the farm to school learning continuum for young people. Cooperative Extension will continue to build on its expertise to develop relevant impactful materials designed to engage learners to meet their educational outcomes."
A “Los Angeles Harvest of the Month” calendar will be designed for Los Angeles Unified Food Services and be available to others in Los Angeles County to use. The calendar will feature local produce items that are highlighted in the educational materials and available to buy through a purchasing app. Coordination between school food services and teachers will help Los Angeles Unified align their lessons and garden planting schedules with foods offered in the cafeteria. The project team plans to launch a pilot of the program at select Title 1 schools, then analyze evaluation data from the pilot program and modify the program model as needed before sharing it with farm to school educators across LA County and offering an accompanying training.
The California Farm to School Incubator Grant Program focuses on supporting local and regional farm to school projects that promote nutrition education, sustainable food production and procurement, and high-quality student engagement through experiential learning.
